QFB

A notable exception.

In the telecoms industry in 86 I spoke to my Union rep on my 1st day before I even got to meet my line manager.

These days I wouldn't even know who they are without looking it up

To what extent are heuristics more useful than formal maths in a modern society?

Oh I think if that were the case, I’d hunt them down one by one.

Alternatively, seriously what the fuck are you on? It can’t just be alcohol.

OK Exeter.

So what would you do if, thanks to your efforts as a maths teacher, your students decided they'd be better off voting for a party with a proper fucking immigration policy?

Eldest goes to secondary in a couple of years and I think we’ll send him to the catholic school in Bishop Stortford.

That will get him sexually abused.

No Pickle, I am not a maths teacher, but if I were a maths teacher, I think I’d have the good grace not to bring politics into into the EQUATION.

A polishman living in Poland, who's kids are being educated in germany, lecturing people in the UK about schooling.

What’s the book? Trigonometry with the Scottish National Party? Advanced mathematics with Dennis Skinner?

You’ve just used the word “useful” to signify its exact opposite. You’re not a maths teacher by any chance, Exeter?

Re: Education in the UK
“genuinely curious - how does one go about teaching maths in any kind of useful context without taking politics into the classroom”?

Genuinely, WTF?!?!

Right kids, M+C squared / X = M to the power of 8*

Remembering that C = Maximilian Robespierre and X equals the Liberal Democrat’s divided by the treaty of Versailles. Away you go.

*someone’s going to tell me that’s not possible.

You’re a teacher Pickle?

Re: Education in the UK
All depends on the context. For some, any kind of instruction on what the birds and the bees like to do may be considered indoctrination. As teachers we’re supposed to be resilient enough in our own political position to handle that kind of thing.

Re: Education in the UK
Ooooo now the cans open and the worms are all over the place.

When is it learning and when is it instruction to pass an exam?

When is it teaching vs Indoctrination through fear of being ostracized for not saying 'the right thing' or thinking 'the right thoughts'
